BOMBING BANSHEES - VMSB 244
Marine
Squadron VMSB-244 (nicknamed the “Bombing Banshees”)
was the first USMC Squadron to fly Curtiss SB2C-4 Helldivers
in combat operations. The dive bomber was designed in 1939
but faced numerous design changes before proving to be a formidable
aerial weapon. Helldivers dropped bombs and depth charges
and strafed with cannon, rocket, and machine gun fire. Shown
in June 1945 over the Philippine Island of Mindanao two VMSB-244
Bombing Banshees Helldivers are seen in action. |
