THE VIENNA WALTZ
“FLAK
BAIT: THE 460THBG OVER WIENER-NEUSTADT, MAY 10, 1944”,
for the March 2005 edition of AVIATION HISTORY Magazine. The
original artwork is an oil painting on canvas, 24”x36”,
copyright Jack Fellows, ASAA 2004. In the painting we see
two B-24 Liberators of the 462nd Bomb Squadron/460th Bomb
Group enduring the intense anti-aircraft defenses around the
Wiener-Neustadt target area, just outside Vienna, Australia.
The narrative focuses on the ordeal of the plane in the foreground,
nicknamed MAXWELL HOUSE/Good to the Last Drop; reflecting
on a popular coffee radio advertising of that era. The pilot
was Flight Officer Albert Lowe. |
