'SQUIRLBATE'
HIS DOGFIGHT AT ORO BAY
2nd Lt. Richard Vodra, 8th Fighter Squadron / 49th Fighter Group P-40 pilot coaxed a badly-mauled and smoking P-40 nicknamed ‘’Squirlbate’’ into position behind a Tainan Air Group Zero pilot who was absorbed with the task of shooting down another 8th Sqdn. P-40. As a result of Lt. Vodra’s action, on the 14th of May, 1943, squadron-mate Lt. Robert White was able to escape and fight another day. Lt. Vodra was awarded the Silver Star for his actions that day in the skies over Oro Bay, Papua, New Guinea.
